Can you believe it’s almost 2022? This year went by so fast, I can’t even remember what I did, despite spend most of the year in lockdown. But a good thing that’s come out of it is I got a new job! And I’m very happy there and enjoy going to work. What was one good thing that happened to you in 2021?
But here we are, once again participating in the End of Year Survey created by Jamie @ The Perpetual Page Turner. It’s an annual event that many bloggers participate in. Like last year, I’ve added my own style to this survey, with a couple of unique questions I came up with on my own. Also, there are usually some stats at the beginning of the post, but I’ll be doing a seperate post about my reading stats soon, so I haven’t added them here.
Best in books
Best book read in 2021
Without a doubt, the best book I read this year was The Kingdoms by Natasha Pulley. I haven’t stopped thinking about it since I read it in October and I’m already planning on rereading it for 2022. It’s so beautifully written and structured, I can’t get over it!
BEST SERIES YOU STARTED IN 2021? BEST SEQUEL OF 2021? BEST SERIES ENDER OF 2021?
Best series started: Dark Rise by C.S. Pacat! This is the first book in a new series and I already adore it. Pacat is my favourite author of all time and I can’t wait to see what happens next in this series!
Best sequel: Role Model by Rachel Reid. This is the 5th book in the Game Changers series and I love it so much! Definitely an incredible sequel, and I can’t wait for the final novel.
Best series ender: Funeral Games by Mary Renault. Oh this final novel in the Alexander trilogy was heartbreaking and perfect. An amazing final novel for an incredible series.
BEST BOOK FROM A GENRE YOU DON’T TYPICALLY READ/WAS OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE?
Winter’s Orbit was a fantastic novel and ignited my love of sci-fi books! Previously, I hated sci-fi and never enjoyed a single book I read. Then I read Winter’s Orbit and realised I love queer sci-fi books! And after reading this novel, I binge read a ton of queer sci-fi books.
BEST WORLDBUILDING/MOST VIVID SETTING YOU READ THIS YEAR?
Don’t laugh at this cover, but Claiming, Tails and Other Alien Artifacts was a great novel by Lyn Gala. The worldbuilding is amazing, and you can tell the author put a lot of thought into the world she created which definitely came through on the page. Love it.
BEST 2021 DEBUT YOU READ?
100% Dark Rise by C.S. Pacat. I love everything about this book 😭

HIDDEN GEM OF THE YEAR?
Tommy Cabot Was Here is such a sweet, gentle book! Definitely wasn’t expecting it or to enjoy it so much.

The Darkness Outside Us ruined me. There’s a plot twist about a quarter of the way through the book and when everything starts coming together, I was on the edge of my seat. Such a powerful book that really left an impact on me.
MOST UNIQUE BOOK YOU READ IN 2021?
Homegoing is such a unique novel. Each chapter is told from a different perspective of one of the twi original characters descendants, from the 18th century to modern times. So enjoyable and such a beautiful read.
MOST BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN BOOK READ IN 2021?
Drop Bear by Evelyn Araluen is a collection of poetry by an Aboriginal woman and it’s without a doubt the most beautiful writing I’ve read all year!
MOST THOUGHT-PROVOKING/LIFE-CHANGING BOOK OF 2021?
In the Dream House was a difficult memoir to read but I’m glad I did. It made me rethink domestic violence in queer relationships.

Emma by Jane Austen! I tried reading this book in high school and really hated it! Then I read it this year and absolutely loved it — so definitely a surprise for me!

She Who Became the Sun is a non-stop action-packed novel! I couldn’t stop reading this book and I am desperate for the sequel.

The Pull of the Stars shocked me in its depiction of childbirth. If you don’t want to be scarred, don’t read this book! I’m giving serious reconsideration in wanting to have kids lol.

BOOK THAT MADE YOU THE MOST MAD (DOESN’T NECESSARILY MEAN YOU DIDN’T LIKE IT)?
I loved reading Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982, but its depiction of gender inequality in Korea was difficult to read and made me very mad. Such a great read though and I highly recommend it!
BOOK YOU WERE EXCITED ABOUT & THOUGHT YOU WERE GOING TO LOVE MORE BUT DIDN’T?
Since I loved Frankenstein I thought I would love Dracula just as much, but no such luck. I was bored and hated a lot of the characters.

OTP OF THE YEAR (YOU WILL GO DOWN WITH THIS SHIP!)
Will and James from Dark Rise. I am utterly obsessed with this book.
FAVOURITE NON-ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIP OF THE YEAR
I love the friendship between Ilya Rozanov and Troy Barrett in Role Model so much! Troy is an anxious, cold-hearted mess and Ilya really takes him under his wing and supports Troy so much. And by the end of the book, they’re great friends.
NEWEST FICTIONAL CRUSH FROM A BOOK YOU READ IN 2021?
Definitely Mr Knightly from Emma! He’s funny, critical, and a bit morose, but he genuinely loves Emma so much. They’re perfect for each other, and he’s perfect too.
