Blogmas #6: 8 Graphic Novels to Read to Catch Up on Your Goodreads Goal

Blogmas day 6 and I’m still posting! Yay!

Today, I’m bringing you graphic novels that you can read to quickly catch up on your Goodreads goal. If you’re a bit behind, definitely check out these books!

Fence Vol 1. by C.S. Pacat and Johanna the Mad

For those of you who don’t know, C.S. Pacat is my favourite writer and her first graphic novel is no exception! I adore this series so damn much! It’s hilarious and so brilliantly done.

It follows 16-year-old Nicholas who is granted a scholarship to an elite fencing academy where he must work twice as hard as the rich kids he’s surrounded by to earn his place there. But soon he’s forming friendships with his fellow students and having the best year of his life.

The Old Guard: Opening Fire by Greg Rucka & Leandro Fernández

If you’ve watched the movie that this graphic novel is based on, why not try reading the graphic novel!? You won’t regret it — it’s queer and historical, two of my favourite things!

It follows immortal soldiers, led by Andromache of Scythia, who work for whoever can afford them. But in the 21st century, being immortal is a hard secret to keep and soon there’s a sinister force out there that is after them.

Check, Please! by Ngozi Ukazu

If you’re looking for absolute sweetness and the most cinnamon roll protagonist, then look no further!

Check, Please! is about Bitty, a junior figure skater and talented amateur pâtissier, who joins his new uni’s hockey team. It’s difficult as hell for him, especially since he doesn’t like being hit, but Bitty also has to contend with a very moody, but handsome, captain.

The Prince and the Dressmaker by Jen Wang

This is such a sweet graphic novel about a genderfluid person that will warm your heart. If you want to smile like a loon, read this!

It’s about Prince Sebastian who is looking for a bride, or at least his parents are for him. Sebastian is too busy hiding his secret life from everyone: at night, he puts on beautiful dresses and becomes Lady Crystallia. His secret weapon, and best friend, is an amazing dressmaker who is the only person who know’s Sebastian’s secret.

Nimona by Noelle Stevenson

This is such a fun graphic novel that you won’t want to put down! Another one about queer villains 👀

It’s about Nimona, a shapeshifter who is obsessed with being a villain. Lord Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta and hires Nimona as his sidekick. Together, the two begin to wreak havoc. Their mission: to prove that Sir Ambrosius Goldloin and his friends aren’t the heroes everyone thinks they are.

On a Sunbeam by Tillie Walden

A beautiful, moving sapphic space story that I need more people to read!

On a Sunbeam follows Mia who joins a space crew. Her and her new team’s job is to rebuild beautiful, broken-down structures. As Mia gets to know her team, she remembers her final year in boarding school when she fell in love with a mysterious new student … and eventually tells her friends the reason she joined their team was to track down her long-lost love.

My Brother’s Husband by Gengoroh Tagame

Oh gosh. If you’re looking for a beautiful but heartbreaking story, then look no further than My Brother’s Husband. Just be prepared to cry.

It follows Yaichi, a work from home dad in Tokyo who is still grieving the death of his wife as he cares for their daughter, Kana. Their lives suddenly change when Canadian Mike Flanagan arrives, the widower of Yaichi’s estranged gay twin, Ryoji. Mike wants to connect with Ryoji’s family, but Yaichi struggles to come to terms and feel comfortable with his queerness.

Sleepless Vol. 1 by Sarah Vaughn

This is such an underrated graphic novel that I can’t believe more people haven’t read! Please get onto it ASAP!

It follows Lady Poppy, the illegitimate daughter of the former king, whose life is threatened by an assassin as a new king takes her father’s place. Poppy’s one light is her friend, the Sleepless Knight Cyrenic, who is part of a magical sect that take a vow to never sleep in order to protect royalty. Together, Poppy and Cyrenic must work to find out who wants Poppy dead and deny their feelings for one another.
