29 Great Shows to Binge During Lockdown

Hi all!

So I’m a bit of a show watcher, as you will see reading this post. And I thought I would share some of the amazing shows I’ve watched/binged over the years that I think are perfect to watch during a time where most of us are stuck at home.

These shows are either really wholesome, funny, or are addictive and have so many episodes that you’ll be able to smash them out in a few days! All these shows are ones I’ve watched and enjoyed and highly recommend, so I hope you find a new favourite among them!

Disclaimer: I’ve explained where to watch these shows and as you’ll see, a lot are available on Netflix Australia — not my fault they buy almost every show! — but I’m not sure if they’re available in every country, so you may have to find another way to watch them if can’t access them through your country’s Netflix.

The Untamed (Netflix & YouTube) 

The Untamed is perfect to binge because there’s 50 episodes and each is more wilder, addictive and dramatic then the next. While the book it is based on is explicitly queer, the show is not, but even so the show makers and the actors do a great job of showing how the two main characters are clearly in love with each other.

The show is about a demonic cultivator named Wei WuXian whose cultivation of evil magic has led to his death after a major war. Sixteen years later, he is brought back to life by a young man who wants Wei WuXian to seek revenge against the people who hurt him. And so Wei WuXian, along with an old friend Lan WangJi, travel together and try to find out what exactly happened all those years ago that led to Wei WuXian’s death.

Schitt’s Creek (Netflix)

If you want a show that will make you laugh and adore the characters, then Schitt’s Creek is that show.

It’s about a super rich family who lose all their money when their accountant steals it all, and have to move to the one asset they still legally own: a tiny, kind of gross town that the father bought as a joke for his son’s birthday one year, Schitt’s Creek. The Rose family has to learn to acclimate to this tiny town and the hilarious people who live there, and eventually realise they enjoy living there.

The Mandalorian (Disney+)

The Mandalorian, in my opinion, is one of the best additions to the Star Wars universe and I can’t wait for season 2. Two words: Baby Yoda!

The show is about a bounty hunter called the Mandalorian, that is sent on a top-secret mission to capture an unknown creature, but when he discovers its a baby, instead of offering him up to be killed, he takes the baby under his wing and protects him instead.

Lucifer (Netflix)

I binge-watched Lucifer over a weekend and a bit and it was so much fun. This show is ridiculous but so addictive, I couldn’t stop myself from watching. And, hurry up and release the final season, please!

The show is about Lucifer, the devil, who ascends to Earth because he’s bored of Hell and ends up helping a homicide detective solve crimes. Yes, I did say it was ridiculous, but trust me you won’t be able to stop watching.

Avatar: The Last Airbender (Netflix)

If you haven’t watched Avatar: The Last Airbender yet, then now is the perfect time because this show is iconic and so incredibly well done. I’ve rewatched all three seasons three times each, and I still can’t get enough of it.

The show is about Katara and her brother Sokka who accidentally find a boy in an iceberg, who ends up being the Avatar, a powerful bender who can control all four elements and who disappeared 100 years ago. Aang, the Avatar, Katara and Sokka must work together to defeat the Fire Nation, who have risen in power and is slowly taking over every country.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Netflix)

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is another absolutely ridiculous show, but it has so much heart and is so wholesome and funny. I HIGHLY recommend this show, especially if you’re struggling with lockdown. It will put a smile on your face.

It’s about Kimmy who has spent over a decade trapped in an underground bunker by a cult leader, and who finally breaks free. She moves to New York City and moves in with a roommate named Titus (one of TV’s greatest characters ever), and the show follows her life as she tries to set herself up.

One Day at a Time (Netflix)

If you’re looking for another wholesome show, then definitely watch One Day at a Time! While this show is so sweet and fun, it also discusses really important topics like, racism, discovering your sexuality in a religious and cultural household, and immigrants facing deportation.

It’s about a Cuban American family and their daily lives, as the mother works as a nurse, the daughter is discovering her sexuality, the son is being a little shit, and the ultra religious grandmother is being an icon.

Derry Girls (Netflix)

I adore Derry Girls so freaking much and if you’re not watching it, what are you doing with your life? I relate so much to these girls, as I also attended a Catholic all-girls school.

This show is about four teen girls in 1990s Ireland during the Troubles, a conflict between Northern Ireland and Ireland. Erin and her three best friends become friends with an English boy who attends their Catholic all-girls school, and watch as the group gets into hilarious mess after hilarious mess.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (Netflix)

She-Ra is so damn good, I can’t get over it! The epic fight scenes, the sexual tension between the two main female characters, the discussion around staying loyal to a group even when you know they’re evil or trying to break away … all god tier.

The show is about a young battle leader named Adora who discovers that the Horde she was raised in and trained to become a fierce warrior for are actually the bad guys in a centuries-long war after she meets Glimmer, a princess, and Bow, who work for the resistance. After she discovers a magical sword that answers only to her, Adora becomes She-Ra, a powerful princess who has the power to save the planet from the Horde.

Dear White People (Netflix)

Dear White People is part comedy, part drama, and part mystery. I recommend this show so much because it touches on everyday racism that Black people in America experience from the perspective of different Black people. And my favourite part of this show is the academic mystery the two main characters are investigating.

The show is about Samantha who runs a radio show on her predominantly white Ivy League university called “Dear White People” where she discusses the racism she and all other Black students experience. When its revealed Sam is dating a white guy, her friends lose confidence in her and her show is threatened by the university.

A Series of Unfortunate Events (Netflix)

This is one of the best adaptions of a book I’ve ever watched and I need everyone to watch it! I just love the aesthetic of the show and how close it follows the books (except for the last episode, which is good because the last book was so bad).

As most people know, A Series of Unfortunate Events is about siblings Violet, Klaus and Sunny who, after the parents die in a house fire, are sent to live with their relative, Count Olaf, who is out to steal their fortune.

Superstore (Hulu)

Superstore is SUCH a relatable show, and this is coming from someone who works in a massive retail store like this and I can tell you that basically everything, especially the customer interactions, are so accurate.

The show’s about team members at a massive superstore who just go through the humdrum of retail work life, when a new employee named Jonah is hired. Trust me when I say you’ll be laughing your head off when you watch this!

The Dragon Prince (Netflix)

The Dragon Prince is from the creators of Avatar: The Last Airbender so if you love one show, you’re definitely going to love the other. I watched about five minutes before I realised this was going to be an amazing show.

It follows two stepbrother princes who go on a journey with one of their father’s potential assassins to give back a baby dragon prince egg to the queen of the dragons to prevent an all-out war between the human race and the magical one.

Dramaworld (Netflix)

Oh gosh, this show is just hilarious and so much fun! There’s 10 episodes and they’re all under 15 minutes long, so you can get through this show very quickly.

Dramaworld is about a college student who is obsessed with a Korean TV show, and after a weird accident, she suddenly finds herself IN that same show and gets to know her favourite characters. Highly recommend!!

Black Mirror (Netflix)

You’ve probably heard of Black Mirror, but if you haven’t, please watch this show. It’s super fucked up, but it is so powerful and it’s hard to look away.

If you’re going to watch this show, here’s a warning: DO NOT watch the first episode of season 1, it will put you off the show completely! Thankfully this is a show that doesn’t need to be watched in order, so once you finished all the other episodes, you can go back and watch that first episode. If you want to know why I’m warning you off the first episode, highlight the white text, but I suggest you don’t as it’s disgusting: the first episode features a man having sex with a pig and you see him doing it. Like I said, gross! I warned you!

Anyway, the show is an anthology focused around technology in the very near future and how it destroys our lives.

Chewing Gum (Netflix)

I love this show and I love Michaela Coel because she’s just so damn hilarious. She both writes and stars in Chewing Gum and if you want to watch something that will make you pee yourself laughing, watch this!

The show is about a 24 year old woman who lives with a VERY religious, restorative mother and sister, and who is on a mission to lose her virginity.

Blown Away (Netflix)

Blown Away is such a cool show and one I binged in an entire night 😅. It’s just so absorbing, you literally cannot look away from the screen because the artists are so incredible.

It’s a reality show with contestants of glassblowers. Each episode, they need to complete two challenges, with one person leaving the show. The final winner has a chance to win $60,000 and an artist residency at the Museum of Glass.

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries (YouTube)

Oh, I adore this show so much! It’s so beautiful and lovely, and the best thing is, all episodes are between 2-8 minutes long so you can go through it quickly (although there is 100 episodes (but they’re free!)

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries is a modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice set through vlogs in her bedroom about Lizzie Bennet’s life when rich Bing moves into a mansion in her neighbourhood.

Grace and Frankie (Netflix)

Grace and Frankie really stole my heart here. It’s one of those surprisingly good shows that you quickly get hooked on and end up bingeing. It’s also genuinely hilarious, and I want to marry Brianna.

The show is about two women, Grace and Frankie, who discover that their husbands have been having an affair with each other for 20 years and want to now get married. Finding their entire lives are uprooted, they decide to move in together and navigate life at 70.

Trollhunters (Netflix)

Trollhunters is one of my favourite shows ever because it has everything: humour, amazing characters, and incredible worldbuilding (I also really love children’s cartoons haha).

It’s about a teen named Jim who discovers an ancient pendant and becomes the mythical “Trollhunter”, a creature who has to protect Trollkind from the evil Trolls. However, this is the first time ever that there’s ever been a human Trollhunter, so now Jim must train to become a powerful Trollhunter in order to protect the world from evil Trolls who are trying to break into the human world again.

Galavant (ABC & Amazon)

Galavant was so ahead of its time and no one appreciated it, which is why it got cancelled after two seasons, but thankfully the story is wrapped up nicely and doesn’t end on a cliffhanger.

The show is a comedic medieval musical about Galavant, a down on his luck knight who’s love was stolen by the evil King Richard. Assisted by Princess Isabella who’s kingdom has been conquered by Richard, and a squire, Galavant travels to defeat the king and take back his one true love.

The Good Place (Netflix)

The Good Place is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen, hands down. You need to experience it! It’s funny, a bit sad, romantic, and plus you learn a lot about philosophy! Not to mention, there’s an awesome plot twist that will make you scream. Don’t look it up, you don’t want it to be ruined for you!

It’s about a woman named Eleanor who is dead and ends up at the Good Place, a utopia-heaven where the top 1% of people end up. But Eleanor quickly realises she’s been sent there by mistake as she was a horrible human back on Earth. Now Eleanor, working with her “soulmate” Chidi, she has to figure out how to become an ethical person in order to earn her stay there.

Yuri!!! on Ice (any Anime website)

Yuri!!! On Ice is one of the most wholesome shows I’ve ever seen and you need to watch it RIGHT NOW! I’ve watched it many times and it just gets better and better. Amazingly, the show had a real figure skater designing the routines in the show and they’re amazing!

It’s about a Japanese figure skater named Yuri who puts his career on hold and returns to his hometown. When a video of his skating routine is put online, Yuri’s skating idol, Victor, sees it and travels to Japan to become Yuri’s trainer.

Gravity Falls (Disney+)

Gravity Falls is another of my favourite shows that I’ve watched way too many times to be healthy, but it’s just so amazing. It’s a kids cartoon show but it’s complex and there’s so many twists and turns, you don’t know what’s going to happen.

It’s about 12 year old twins Dipper and Mabel who are sent to spend the summer with their great uncle who owns a tourist trap called the Mystery Shack. While there, Dipper finds a mysterious journal about magical creatures and he and his sister soon spend their days discovering and fighting paranormal creatures, while not realising a massive conspiracy is right under their noses.

Marlon (Netflix) 

Another show that has been cancelled, but again it doesn’t end in a cliffhanger which is why I’m recommending! It’s such a funny show that is loosely based on Marlon Wayan’s life.

Marlon is about a divorced couple, Marlon, who is a YouTuber, and Ashley, who try and stay friends and coexist for the sake of their two children.

Happy Endings (Amazon)

Oh, this show was so great and didn’t deserve to be cancelled! But again, no cliffhangers and all plot points wrapped up nicely. It’s such a funny show and Vulture said that this show’s cancellation was one of the worst decisions in TV history, because the show is THAT good.

Happy Endings is about a friendship group that is changed forever when on the wedding day of two of them, Alex and Dave, the bride runs off with a different man. Now the friends must cope with the fallout when Alex returns to the friendship group.

Over the Garden Wall (Cartoon Network & Amazon)

This is my favourite show ever and I want everyone to watch it, please! It’s a stunning show that is so aesthetically beautiful with a gorgeous sibling relationship at the heart of it.

Over the Garden Wall is about two brothers, Wirt and Greg, who find themselves lost in a magical forest and are trying to find their way home. On the way, they meet a talking bluebird they befriend, and a cooky cast of interesting characters. But there’s a sinister force that is hunting them.

Black Sails (Stan, Starz & Amazon)

I’ve only watched the first two seasons of this show and need to watch the last two, but what I’ve watched, this show is incredible. I’m actually thinking about rewatching the first two seasons as well because it was phenomenal. If you like queer pirates, this show is for you!

The show is set during the Golden Age of Piracy and follows Captain Flint, a feared pirate, who is hunting for the Spanish treasure on the Urca de Lima and on the way he makes allies and enemies.

Scream Queens – season 1 only! (Amazon)

The reason I say to only watch season 1 of Scream Queens is because season 2 is absolute trash and makes no sense. Thankfully, the first season ends perfectly with no loose ends (in fact, season 2 unravels those loose ends).

It’s about the Kappa Kappa Tau sorority house led by the horrible Chanel and her two Chanels (lackeys). The sorority is threatened by the Dean of the school who forces them to accept any girl who pledges. But soon a 20 year old unsolved murder is brought to light and a serial killer dressed in a red devil outfit begins targeting the girls of the sorority.
