Have I read Goodreads Top 100 YA Books?

Hi all!

If you didn’t know, this week is YA week on Goodreads, which means the website is celebrating all things YA! A few days ago, they revealed the top 100 YA books on Goodreads — meaning the most beloved/popular.

And as I was scrolling through this list I was both surprised from some of their choices and dismayed that I hadn’t read some of them yet! So lets see which one’s I read and which I’ve never even heard of!

  • The Hunger Games: I do love this book but I’m not as obsessed with it as others would be.
  • Harry Potter 1: Love but KJ Rowling can choke.
  • The Fault in our Stars: Eh. Boring. Not really that sad either. Overrated.
  • Divergent: I did adore this at the time but FUCK BOOK 3.
  • The Giver: I need to read this book sometime soon!
  • The Book Thief: A great book that had me in tears.
  • City of Bones: MY FAVOURITE! 😭
  • The Lightning Thief: I ADORE THIS BOOK!

  • The Perks of Being a Wallflower: I hate this book with a passion.
  • Looking for Alaska: I never got into John Green (I’ve only ever read one of his books) and I don’t think I ever will. His books and characters remind me of 2010 Tumblr.
  • The Maze Runner: I’ve never read this series and I don’t think I will, but I loved the movie!
  • Eleanor & Park: I’ve heard this book is actually quite racist so I’m glad I never went anywhere near it.
  • A Wrinkle in Time: This is one of those classic MG/YA books that I need to read!
  • Cinder: I’ve only read the first book in this series because my friends convinced me to, and it was pretty good, but I just have no interest in seeing how the series ends.
  • The Selection: This book features so many of those annoying 2008 YA tropes and I cbf finishing the series.
  • Clockwork Angel: I love this series, but not as much as TMI.

  • The Outsiders: I’ve heard the author of this book is a giant asshole, but I still want to read it because its like a classic YA book.
  • Fangirl: I loved Fangirl! I cried heaps during it, but I don’t see myself rereading it.
  • Red Queen: I think I tried like three times to read this book and I just couldn’t get through it. Guess it’s not for me.
  • Anne of Green Gables: I need to read this book! I have a copy!
  • Vampire Academy: Omg this book! Will always have a special place in my heart 😭
  • Throne of Glass: The first few books in this series were great, but then it got worse. I loved the last book but I’m thoroughly over this series and world.
  • Legend: I quite liked this book but never got around to reading the rest of the series! Maybe I will?
  • The 5th Wave: Not the biggest fan of sci-fi books, so I don’t see myself ever reading this.

  • Anna and the French Kiss: Nah.
  • Graceling: I’ve heard good things about this book so I might read it one day.

  • Daughter of Smoke and Bone: Oh I loved this book! I definitely need to finish the series!
  • A Court of Thorns and Roses: This book was good but slow. The second book is God tier.
  • I’ll Give You the Sun: I tried reading this a few years ago and didn’t finish it, but I definitely want to!
  • Everything Everything: I haven’t read this book but I know what the plot twist is and I’m not into it. So no.
  • All The Bright Places: I don’t know much about this book. Is it the super fatphobic one?

Screen Shot 2019-07-16 at 11.03.49 pm

  • The Raven Boys: I love this first book, but the last book is the WORST. I might reread the books on audiobook before the new series.
  • Perfect Chemistry: Ummm, who are you?
  • The Hate U Give: I loved this book! I think most people do!
  • To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before: I watched the movie and really enjoyed it, but I just can’t see myself reading another YA hetero contemporary romance.
  • Six of Crows: LOVE!
  • Shadow and Bone: LOVE EVEN MORE!
  • It’s Kind of a Funny Story: I don’t think I know what this book is about
  • Hopeless: I cbf reading any more Colleen Hoover books, they’re literally all the same.

  • Obsidian: Ummm, who are you?
  • Unwind: Actually, who are you????

  • The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer: I read this entire series and I cannot remember a thing about it oops.
  • Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe: OHHH THIS BOOK 😭
  • Just Listen: Nah.
  • A Monster Calls: I kind of want to read a Patrick Ness book but I also can’t be bothered.
  • Turtles All the Way Down: Again cbf with John Green. He’s so overrated.

  • The Truth About Forever: I think Sarah Dessen is good for young YA readers, but I’m not interested.
  • Lady Midnight: I still enjoyed this series but it’s my least favourite Cassie Clare book series.
  • An Ember in the Ashes: I really enjoyed this book! but I didn’t like Laia that much so she kinda ruined the book for me. I don’t think I’ll be finishing the series, though I might.
  • The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian: FUCK NO. I don’t support abusers.
  • Simon vs. the Homo sapiens Agenda:  I definitely enjoyed this but the way people uphold it as the best queer book ever pisses me off!
  • The Darkest Minds: I might have read this book when I was younger, but I’m just not interested anymore.
  • Unearthly: Nah.
  • Bloodlines: Love this series, but Vampire Academy is God tier.

I was sitting next to someone on the train yesterday who was reading City of Bones and I just wanted to scream at him about how awesome the series is, but didn’t want to scare him hahaha. TMI will ALWAYS be my favourite. The other Cassie Clare books are good, but TMI is my true love. I also laughed about your comment on book 3 of the Divergent series….IT’S THE WORST. I read the Outsiders at school and didn’t like it (mostly because it was one of those books we were forced to read), but the movie isn’t too bad, it’s pretty much the same as the book.

I have only read 24 of these books!!!!!! I put it down to me not reading YA until a few years ago (I remember when I joined twitter I had to google what YA stood for lmao). You’ve done really well!! This is such an awesome post, I loved it!!

OMG! I don’t think I would have been able to stop myself from talking about TMI haha! Same here: I love her other books but TMI is god tier. I think the outsiders is on my list of classics books to read so I will read it eventually but I’m not in a rush for it
24 is still better than nothing! So many books on this list are ones I haven’t even heard of and I doubt are super popular to be on this list so I’m a bit confused at a lot of them lol
OMG that is so cute that you had to google YA! haha thank you lovely 💕

This is a fun prompt! I read someone saying that Eleanor & Park is racist, and I personally think that’s a mis-read on their part. The book is set in the 80s, so there is some racism on behalf of characters, however it’s definitely intentional to show that people were racist in the 80s. It’s possible the person was concerned about the way Park’s mom (a Korean immigrant) is written because her accent is phonetically written out, which might come across as stereotypical. But, my opinion, we don’t get upset when people spell out southern or cockney accents, so we probably shouldn’t get offended by foreign accents either. That’s just my opinion, though.

So funny seeing the number of random books there that you’ve just dismissed – this would be my reaction too 😂
Also, thanks for pointing out problematic authors/books!

Hahah I think a couple of years ago I would have been interested in those types of books, but these days I only want to read books I’m genuinely interested in.
      Lmao you’re welcome!! 💕

I absolutely loved this prompt! But how do you not know Unwind ?! I admit I haven’t read it (I wasn’t interested after a few chapters) But it seems to me like a classic YA Book (if you count 2007 as a classic 😂) that everybody knew about, was in the libraries and such 😱😂

Wow, 43 books, that is awesome! I have read 36 books on this list, which is more than I thought. I was thinking it would be in the 20s. There are a few older ones that I think I read, but I didn’t count because idk if I heard so much about them or actually read then back in the day. How the memory goes! 😂

I love this idea for a blog post!

The Giver you need to read – I read it last year and it’s an absolute staple in YA dystopa. If you EVER feel like picking up a Green book again read Looking for Alaska (I also think a lot of his stuff is overrated but this is still my favourite of his). Children of Blood & Bone – GIRL! Read this ASAP because it is absolutely every. thing.

And I’m going to quietly ignore what you said about Illuminae. Just saying 💕

Haha I’m sorry!! I like Illuminae but I just can’t see the hype ?? sorry 😅😭

I’ve read 34 of these books, and we have a lot of them in common 🙂
I’ve read some of Brandon Sanderson books, but then stopped when I learned his position on same-sex marriage… Seeing what you wrote about some of the authors on this list and what I read on your blog, I thought you might want to know…
And I really liked the Giver ! It’s actually also one of my mom’s favorite YA books of all time !
And I also really enjoyed Angelfall so I hope you will too 🙂

Yay that’s awesome!! Ughhhhhhh why are authors so shady? I was reading up on the crap that Brandon Sanderson has said and yeah I’m definitely going to be rethinking his books. Thanks for letting me know 💕
So many people have told me to read The Giver! Looks like I’ll have to soon 💕

Me: YA is my favorite genre. It’s all I read!

    *after looking through this list*

Me: Okay, so it’s maybe not all I read.😂😂

I’ve read a total of ten! They were a good ten so I’m proud of that and plus- I have both the Infernal Devices and Vampire Academy on my TBR.☺️
