Birthday Special: My Favourite Characters Ever

Hi all!

IT’S MY BIRTHDAY TODAY!

Yep, I’m the big 25, a quarter of my life is gone, I’m halfway to 50 — what ever other idioms you want to say. Get them out of your system now.

So for my birthday, I wanted to do something special on my blog! And since I’ve already written up a list of my ultimate favourite books in the whole world, I decided to scream about my favourite characters so you all can get to know me a little better!

I’m sure you already know some of my favourite characters so it shouldn’t be a surprise to find them on this list, but some might!

Damen & Laurent

“How can you trust me, after what your own brother did to you?”
“Because he was false”, said Damen, “and you are true. I have never known a truer man.”

In a reveal that surprised absolutely no one, I freaking adore Damen and Laurent so so so so so much. I started reading Captive Prince by C.S. Pacat back in 2009? 2008? Back when it was a new-ish original online book on LiveJournal. I started reading very early on — like chapter 5 or 6 — and was never able to get these characters out of my head.

I love Damen more than anything. He is like the definition of a disaster bi. He’s brave and strong and loves so damn much, and at times he can be pretty vulnerable. He’s also like good at doing everything and sometimes I feel like Laurent just staring at this abnormally large man wondering how the hell he can be so perfect.

And speaking of Laurent … man, I love him too. If you’ve read the Captive Prince series, you know that Laurent starts off as the villain: he’s a genuinely horrible person who inflicts as much damage as possible on Damen — but as the story develops, you realise he is only that person because of someone else who has affected his life. Anyway, Laurent is actually the softest person once you get to know him, and that’s frequently a side he only lets Damen see. He’s gorgeous and lovely and I just want to hug him, but he’d just stand there awkwardly if I tried.

Adelina Amouteru

“Once upon a time, a girl had a father, a prince, a society of friends. Then they betrayed her, so she destroyed them all.”

Adelina is the main character in The Young Elites series by Marie Lu. I adore her so much because she’s not a heroine or the damsel in distress: she’s the villain. And we get to read about her villain origin story which is incredible. After a blood disease, many people were left with powers, but they were hunted down by the royal family.

Adelina’s powers manifest, but they’re evil: they prey on people’s fears and means Adelina is able to exert power over them. In the first book, she tries to be a hero, she tries to fit in. But by the end of the book, she realises she will never be what others want her to be. So she becomes as evil as she can possibly be. She’s amazing and badass and I want more people to read this book.

Seregil í Korit Solun Meringil Bôkthersa & Alec í Amasa of Kerry

“You hardly know me. Why do you want me to come with you?”
“Who knows? Perhaps you remind me just a bit of—”
“Someone you used to know?” Alec interjected skeptically.
“Someone I used to be.”

Seregil and Alex are the main characters in Lynn Flewelling’s Nightrunner series and I adore these men so freaking much! They meet when Seregil gets himself captured as part of his job as a Watcher (spy). In some noble’s dungeon, he meets Alec who was unjustly arrested — together they escape, and Alec becomes Seregil’s apprentice.

Seregil is the best: he’s another disaster bi who always finds himself in these ridiculous situations that he is somehow able to get himself out of. He’s funny and loveable, and you can see why Alec admires him so much. Alec is probably Seregil’s opposite: where Seregil is loud, Alec is quiet. Alec is super sweet and tender and I want to protect him forever. They’re Talimenios, which is another word for soulmates.

Lizzie Bennet

“There is a stubbornness about me that never can bear to be frightened at the will of others. My courage always rises at every attempt to intimidate me.”

If you’ve been following my blog for any amount of time, you know that my favourite book ever is Pride and Prejudice. I fell in love with this book through my dad, who is obsessed with the BBC adaptation and I read it for the first time in high school.

I fell in love with Lizzie Bennet very quickly because I feel like we’re so similar. She’s bitchy as hell, hates people who think they’re above everyone else, and is a massive bookworm. But she’s also loving and cares a lot about her family and friends, and wants to protect people. She’s also so sarcastic and I love reading her eviscerate people with her words.

Taylor Markham

“These people have history and I crave history. I crave someone knowing me so well that they can tell what I’m thinking. Jonah Griggs takes my hand under the table and links my fingers with his and I know that I would sacrifice almost anything just to keep this state of mind, for the rest of the week at least.”

jellicoeOn the Jellicoe Road is one of my favourite books ever and I absolutely adore the main character Taylor. Not going to lie, she can be a bit much, but she’s going through a lot. Her mother abandoned her at age 11, she tries to run away at age 14 but someone she cared about betrayed her, and now, at 17, her guardian has gone missing and the boy who betrayed her is coming back to town while she’s been put in charge of a secret society at her school.

So yeah a lot, and she doesn’t handle it well for a good portion of the book, but I love her so much. At the end of the day, she’s really strong and ultimately all she wants is love. I just want to give her a big hug.

Magnus Bane and Alexander Lightwood

“So I’m your first ever Shadowhunter, huh?” Alec said when they separated at last.
“You’re my first so many things, Alec Lightwood.”

This list wouldn’t be complete without the two guys who made me realise I was bi in the first place: Magnus and Alec. I first read City of Bones by Cassandra Clare when I was like 14 and immediately fell in love with both of them — that admiration only grew when they started dating in City of Ashes and City of Glass.

Reading their relationship development over the years has been so freaking amazing and just beautiful: they went from dating on the down-low, to boyfriends, to fiancees, to having two children, to being married 😭. I just adore them both so much and I can’t wait to read about their upcoming series.

Clary Fairchild

“You could have had anything else in the world, and you asked for me.”
Clary smiled up at him. Filthy as he was, covered in blood and dirt, he was the most beautiful thing she’d ever seen.
“But I don’t want anything else in the world.”

Another amazing character from Cassie Clare’s Shadowhunter world. I fell in love with Clary from the very first book and she’s always been an inspiration to me. Honestly, from the first page, I loved this girl and following her journey for over ten years has been incredible.

She starts off being thrown into a strange magical world and ends up becoming its saviour and a hero. I could gush about her all day, but I’ll just say I’m super excited about The Wicked Powers and seeing more of my girl.

Evelyn Hugo

“Evelyn looks at me with purpose. ‘Do you understand what I’m telling you? When you’re given an opportunity to change your life, be ready to do whatever it takes to make it happen. The world doesn’t give things, you take things. If you learn one thing from me, it should probably be that.’”

32620332The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo was one of my favourite novels of 2018 and one I desperately want to reread this year, because of Evelyn. Evelyn is one of my favourite bisexual characters and she is also the one I seem myself the most in – or perhaps it’s accurate to say, I want to see myself in her. This woman is flawed, as all people are, but she’s also incredibly brave, fiercely ambitious, unrepentant, and someone who is willing to do anything to better herself. She’s so empowering.

And the reason I love her so damn much is because she is unapologetically bisexual. Many people in her life try to invalidate and demonise this part of her – even the love of her life. No one has the right to tell you how you should identify – and that is something Evelyn is fiercely passionate about, something she states multiple times in the novel when people mislabel her sexuality.

Elliot Schafer

“Elliot was left to trail behind. As he did, he thought about Luke talking about literary tropes—the fearless hero, the valiant heroine, and where did it all leave him? Sidekick: a horrible indignity, Elliot refused to accept it. And the other idea was some sort of lurking, jealous figure: an Iago, a pathetic pseudo-villain waiting in the wings to plot and bring the hero down. He wasn’t going to plot against Luke, who had dumb daffodil hair and said ‘tropez,’ for God’s sake.”

I love this little shit SO FREAKING MUCH. How do I explain my love for this redheaded, bisexual little devil? He’s the main character in In Other Lands and you can’t help from immediately fall in love with him. He’s very loud, judgemental, and likes being the centre of attention.

He sometimes pushes people away and sometimes other don’t like him that much, but he has a couple of people who would die for him — and it takes him a while to understand that. But deep down, he is very sweet and all he wants is someone to love him, because everyone else in his life has left him. But enough about the sad stuff: he’s also hilarious and amazing and cute. I want everyone to read this book and love Elliot too.

Ryann Bird

“All that I am is a terribly brave small thing, with a terribly brave small life, and a terribly brave love that spans eons.”

36952571Ryann Bird is the main character in K. Ancrum’s upcoming novel The Weight of the Stars! I was so lucky to have received an ARC of this book and I’m going to try and explain how amazing Ryann is. After her parents died in a car accident, Ryann is left to take care of her younger brother, James, by herself, and then one day her brother comes home with a baby, and they have to take care of James’ son together. They live in a trailer park together, and Ryann frequently gets into trouble at school for being late and not putting in effort.

But she’s also the leader of a small group of outcasts, and this group of misfits frequently look towards her whenever they have an issue. She’s a very loving person who doesn’t want much in life: she just wants to be able to take care of those she loves. I adore her and I know everyone else will too when this book comes out.

Seong-Jae Yoon

“You actually like me,” he ventured, and Malcolm smiled, eyes crinkling at the corners.
“Yeah. Yeah, I do.”
“Why?”
“If I tried to list the reasons, you’d punch me before I got to three.”

Seong-Jae is one of the main characters in Cole McCade’s Criminal Intentions series and I fell in love with him from the very first chapter. He’s a police detective who does everything by the book, and he doesn’t like his partner Malcolm, who frequently breaks the rules … until he starts to fall in love with Malcolm.

Seong-Jae is very loving and caring, and he has a cheeky side that no one is able to see until they get really close to him. He’s also demisexual, which we need so much more representation of! And Seong-Jae is so touchy — as in, he likes things done the way he likes them and is often described as a cat and I can definitely see the comparison.

Jude Duarte

“If I cannot be better than them, I will become so much worse.”

Jude is the main character in The Cruel Prince by Holly Black, a book I wasn’t expecting to like because of the hype. But I decided to pick it up to see what everyone was raving about and fell in love with this badass woman. Like, I want to marry her even though she scares me. Because the balls on this woman! She’s a human living in a faerie world, the adopted daughter of the man who killed her parents, and she rises to the position of First Advisor to the King, after putting the King on the throne herself.

And don’t even get me started on her relationship with Prince Cardan: it’s hateful and violent, and neither of them can admit they are in love with the other. I like it so much and I can’t wait for The Queen of Nothing.

Alexander Diaz

“In an instant of sudden, vivid clarity, he can’t believe he ever thought he was straight.”

41150487Alex! Oh, my Alex! I adore this boy so much! My heart! He’s the main character in Casey McQuiston’s Red, White & Royal Blue, which won’t be out until May, but I love him so much! In the novel, he goes through a journey of discovering his sexuality and learns that he’s bisexual and begins dating a boy … although they have to keep it a secret because of the identity of the boy he’s dating 👀.

Alex can be a little haughty at sometimes, he never stops talking, he knows he’s handsome, and he knows how to work people until he gets his way. But he’s also incredibly dedicated, loyal to a fault, and he loves so very hard and with everything he has. He’s a disaster bi in every sense of the word, and I just adore him so much.
