Announcing the Gone With the Wind Readalong

Hi all!

Today I’m announcing my very first readalong! I’m so excited and I hope many of you join in on the fun!

I absolutely love reading classic books, but when it comes to the longer books, I need help to read them. And I’ve found participating in a readalong is the easiest way to read those large classics books that seem so daunting.

Gone with the Wind is a book I’ve wanted to read for a very long time now, and it’s also one of the books on my Classics Club list: a book list of 50 classics novels or more that you must read within a five-year span. Also, if you are also a member of the Classics Club, and this book is on your TBR, this will be a good chance to read it!

But this book does look quite daunting, so I thought what better way to read this book than a readalong?

This readalong will last for one month, from March 1 to March 31, your time!

  • Get a copy of Gone with the Wind. It can be a physical copy, an eBook, or even an audiobook! All are valid!

The schedule

21167793The copy of Gone with the Wind that I own was published by Pan Macmillan in 1991. As we will all have different editions, I’ve made the stops at the end of particular chapters so we’re all reading together.

The page numbers beside the stops are where we’re stopping in my book. As you can see, this breaks down the book to about 200 pages a week! Not so daunting as you thought, right?

Start: March 1
Stop 1:  March 8 at end of chapter 14 (page 209)
Stop 2: March 15th at end of chapter 30 (page 413)
Stop 3: March 22nd at end of chapter 44 (page 629)
End: March 31st (page 825)

I’m thinking about starting a Twitter group to discuss this book, if enough people want to join in. What are your thoughts about this?

    If you tweet your announcement about this event to @ourclassicsclub on Twitter, they’ll probably retweet and get the word out. I know a lot of clubbers have gwtw on their list. You can also mention it on their events page. 🙂

    I’m in. I actually just started rereading it about a week ago but I will gladly pause and join in because this looks like fun and I feel like I’ll get so much more out of it getting to discuss it with you all. Can’t wait.

    I’m so tempted…again. It wasn’t on my books to read this year, but I’m getting into my Civil War mood, and I’ve been eyeing it. I’m seriously going to think about it for March. Jillian got me to read it years ago, and I loved it. Then I started to reread it w/ her a few years back, but I became overwhelmed and stopped. Now I’m thinking about it again. So, as I said…I’m very tempted and will think about it seriously.

    I’m in, I’ve read it many times (first time when I was eleven!) but it’s been years since I’ve read it. I also own The Gone with the Wind Letters and I’ve been meaning to read it forever, so hopefully this will inspire me to finally read it. Thanks for hosting!

        Yes, I was in the sixth grade, I think I finished it in about 2 or 3 days (probably didn’t do much homework!). I’ve always been a fast reader, and the writing style isn’t terribly difficult I’m reading The GWTW Letters now and Mitchell does discuss this, she was criticized for her simple style but she was a journalist, and that’s how she wanted it. She was very pleased that people of all ages could understand it. There were definitely some aspects that went over my head!

        I also remember the movie airing on TV for the first time (back in the 1970s) and it was a big deal. I haven’t watched the movie in years so I’ll have to watch it again — I was lucky enough to see it on a massive screen back in the 1980s, at the Fine Arts Theater in Chicago. If you ever have the chance to see it in a real theater, I highly recommend it.

        I’m so glad her writing style is easy for everyone! That makes me more excited to read it! My mum actually bought the movie for me for Christmas because she knew I wanted to read the book! Hopefully I’ll get the chance to watch it at some point 💕
