Real talk: I was in the middle of creating my own Buzzfeed Unsolved Book Tag when I was scrolling through Twitter and saw that The YA Room had already made one! 😭 Oh well, they did a better job then I could have ever hoped to do lol.

SHANIAC: A book you don’t think is deserving of its hype

I just don’t understand the hype behind Autoboyography! I said in my review that I didn’t feel as though the bisexual representation was correct, although that is certainly just one bi person’s opinion, but aside from that, the whole plot is really gross and weird? It’s about a boy who writes a book about the relationship between him and a real life boy … who he just met … and this boy is reading the book and giving the MC feedback. Not to mention, the MC doesn’t know yet that this boy is gay — in fact, he’s actually closeted. AND the MC treats his best friend horribly. Like, so disgustingly, I was almost sick. Autoboyography doesn’t deserve it’s hype AT ALL.

BOOGARA: A book that chilled you to the core

I know Coraline is a middle grade novel, but it is genuinely terrifying. While the movie is scarier, I was still perched on the edge of my seat when I was reading this book. It’s about a young girl who’s family moves her to a new house, and in this house she discovers a tiny door that leads her to an alternate world where her parents actually have time for her … but the longer she spends time there, the more she realises it isn’t as amazing as she thought it was. Coraline is super creepy and the Other Mother is one of the most terrifying villains I’ve ever come across. I still can’t believe this is a book marketed towards children.

SHITFISH: A book you’re not sure where you stand on

I both love and hate Fingersmith by Sarah Waters. I love it because the f/f romance is SOOOOOOOO well done. It’s a slow, slow, slow burn and it’s enemies to lovers, so yeah, amazing! But, the length of the book and a lot of the scenes were … unnecessary. Not to mention the plot was very complex and plain confusing, which it was done on purpose because the book was inspired by Charles Dickens’s writing style. But even so, it’s a very slow moving book, although the plot twists force you to keep reading. So you can see why I’m having trouble with this book: I love so many parts of it and then I hate so many parts of it. I don’t know what to do.

HEY THERE DEMONS, IT’S ME, YA BOI: A book that kept you up at night

No one is more surprised than me that I absolutely loved the final book in the Throne of Glass series, Kingdom of Ash. I read this 900+ page in two days and it would have been less if I didn’t have to work one of those days. The second day, I told myself I’d read about 100 pages of the book and ended up reading 700 pages lmao. It kept me up the whole day and whole night because it was. So. Good. The plot was incredible and the characters were amazing and adorable. I squealed a lot reading this book, then I cried a bit.

(WHEEZE): A book that made you laugh out loud

A lot of people have told me to read TJ Klune’s Tales of Verania series because TJ does humour really, really well. I’ve never really liked funny books because they just come across as awkward and unfunny to me, but The Lightning-Struck Heart is HILARIOUS. The humour probably isn’t for everyone because it’s dirty and there’s a lot of dick jokes, but I was basically on the floor while reading this book and the sequels. It’s about Sam, gay wizard apprentice who has a massive crush on the Captain of the Royal Guard, Ryan, who is engaged to the Prince. But when the Prince is kidnapped by a talking dragon, Sam, Ryan and Sam’s best friends, a half-giant called Tiggy and a hornless gay unicorn named Gary, go on an adventure to rescue the Prince. It’s funny, but at times really heartbreaking because I love Sam and Ryan so much!

MOTHMAN: A hyped fave

Strange the Dreamer is such a beautiful novel and deserves all the hype it gets. Laini Taylor has created a rich, complex and incredible world in this series, and her lyrical descriptions draw you in to the story. It’s about a young man named Lazlo, an orphan who works as a junior librarian in one of the biggest libraries in the world. Lazlo has been obsessed with the mysterious city of Weep his whole life, especially after when, one day, the city’s real name disappeared from the minds of everyone in the world. When a delegation arrives from Weep searching for people to help them, Lazlo gets the chance of a lifetime when he joins the delegation. The series is just so good, because it has such a unique plot: I’ve never come across anything like this before and that’s why it deserves all the hype and more!

HOLY WATER: A book you’d protect with your life

In Other Lands is one of my favourite YA novels of all time. This sweet, fun book follows a young boy named Elliot from ages 13-17 as he deals with going to magic school, stopping plots for war, making friends and falling in love. It’s a book I would 100% protect with my life because it’s so soft and lovely. What I love most about it is that Elliot is bisexual, and he discovers this early in his life. In Other Lands is probably the best representation of bisexuality I’ve ever come across. Elliot understands his sexuality perfectly and I could connect so well to his definition of bisexuality. He likes boys and girls equally — like me — and although sometimes it’s a struggle for people to understand his sexuality, he stands up for himself and knows who he is. So yeah, definitely protecting this book.

DEMONS: A book you’re too scared to read

I’m genuinely terrified of reading American Psycho by Brett Easton Ellis. My cousin read it years ago and told me a bit about it, and I’ve been scared of it every since. It’s about a hvigh-functing white man who works on Wall Street who is secretly a serial killer. He’s a psychopath, but of the violent kind, and feels no remorse when he kills someone. Apparently, the descriptions of his murders are disgusting and very off-putting. The one that I’m thinking about that my cousin told me made me have nightmares. So yeah, very scared to read this book — although three’s a small part of me that wants to!

BUT FOR NOW, THIS MYSTERY WILL REMAIN… UNSOLVED: A book you needed more from or didn’t want to end

You all know that I absolutely love the Captive Prince series. That’s a given. And I LOVE the final book in the series Kings Rising because it’s a great conclusion — the story comes full circle. That being said, I wanted more from the book, specifically a conclusion. The book ends rather abruptly, although with an indication of what will happen in the future … but I still would have loved something set a year or so after Kings Rising. I mean, we get the short stories and they’re great — especially The Summer Palace which does work as a epilogue — but it should have been in Kings Rising! I want to know what happens to Jokaste and her son; I want to know how Damen and Laurent bring their kingdoms — perpetual enemies — together; I want to know how they deal with the issue of an heir. There’s just still so much that I want to know.

BUZZFEED UNSOLVED POSTMORTEM: A book you still have questions about

I LOVE If We Were Villains. It’s a great novel with a bunch of snooty, up-themselves Shakespearean actors, and a lot of queer subtext. It’s creepy, dark and awesome. But! The ending is VERY ambiguous … and that low-key annoyed me. As an editor and an amateur writer, I completely understand why the author made this particular decision, but as a reader, I’m annoyed because I want a solid ending and a proper answer. I won’t give away too much of what happens, but it involves the main character, Oliver, and his best friend, James, after Oliver is released from prison. If you’ve read this book, let me know what you think about the ending!

HOT DAGA: A trashy fave

I absolutely LOVE The Mortal Instruments series but even I can admit it’s a trashy fave. The series probably isn’t as good as Cassandra Clare’s other series, The Infernal Devices and The Dark Artifices, but I’ve been reading The Mortal Instruments since I was 14 and I feel really, really nostalgic about it. It was the first book series where I could see myself in: in the character Magnus because he’s bisexual, and in the character Alec because he feels a little outside of his family and can’t connect that well to his parents (at least in the first few books). That’s probably more information than you needed, but anyway. The series has been related to Harry Potter fan-fiction a lot and I guess I can kinda see it, which is why I call it trashy. I still, and always will, love this series though!
