This quote is from Fingersmith by Sarah Waters – an amazing queer take on the Dickensian formula – and it just speaks to me. I wrote a 5000 word essay about women and literature in the 19th century for university, about how women often had to make a place for themselves in publishing and reading because they were never taken seriously by their male counterparts, and this quote encapsulates that. How reading was seen as a dangerous thing for women because it could lead them to realise how shitty their lives actually were and perhaps start to demand change.
